Construction of the social accounting matrix for water as an economic input.

This document presents the procedures and considerations for constructing a Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) for the year 2012 that integrates information from the National Water Accounts produced by DANE. With this analytical tool, it is possible to determine the use of water resources within the economy and identify the potential effects that changes in water demand or pricing could have on it.

The study is based on data from the National Water Study and the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting for Water to estimate the economy’s demand for water resources. In addition, it uses reports from the Water Use Fee to propose five pricing scenarios that allow for the monetary quantification of this demand and its incorporation into the constructed matrix. Finally, the document presents several macroeconomic aggregates derived from the exercise.
